Madison Heights High School
1965 Class Reunion

Reunion Comments

What did classmates say about our 40 year class reunion?

All I can say about life is, Oh God, enjoy it!
-Bob Newhart

And enjoy it we did during the weekend and the main event at the Paramount on Saturday evening. Here is what some of your classmates, who were able to attend, had to say about the event…

Terri Applegate sent this wonderfully written commentary by a columnist about his class and it is very apropos and certainly fits the way many of us felt about this past class reunion...
"Our Class"
“I had simply underestimated the human bond, the credential that would stand always by our names… We were born at the same time… We grew up in the same classes… Our popular songs, radio broadcasts, newspaper stories and giddy fads touched our contemporaries in a thousand other towns, but never just the way they touched us, because we were different, not just singly but different together.
Now still tramping through the vast complexities of human life and death, we stay forever imprinted and linked by who we were, and in gathering together, we have reconfirmed our identities.
These well-lined faces are glad to see me. I am glad to see them. We must have loved each other better than we knew.”
—James S. Wamsley
Presented by New York Central System, 1948.

"I am so impressed at what a wonderful weekend you put together. You provided so many people with wonderful memories and a chance to catch up on lives of people of our youth. I loved it and had a marvelous time.  Millie, Dara, Jeanie and I just saw the Wedding Crashers and decided we should start being Reunion Crashers since we had such a blast!!!!! This was a weekend I will remember for as long as my old mind will allow.  Thank you so very much for ALL your hard work. Peace, love, blessings,"
Pepper

"But now it's my turn to tell you what a truly memorable and excellent reunion yours was. This is my third Class of '65 Reunion, and each one has been better than the one before. This one was nothing short of OUTSTANDING!
The organization, activities, location and overall presentation were simply first class. I think that was such a great idea to take pictures of groups from each different grade school. And recognizing each graduate individually was beyond all expectations. Sure, it took some time, but was well worth the effort. If there is a "right size" class yours may be very close to perfect. My own class size, at 787, may end up being too large to recognize everyone that attends.
I will be taking many of your good ideas with me as I help to plan my own 40th class reunion. We will have to work hard to make the reunion of the North Central Class of "67 reunion as memorable as yours. Our "claim to fame" is that Governor Mitch Daniels is a member of our class.
Until your next reunion...."

"Souvenir de Paris (Saint Maur) et de notre formidable reunion, grace a toi surtout. Merci beaucoup!"

The whole weekend was lots of fun and filled with memories that I still think about.
Diane Risinger Daoust - Anderson

Dear Eric,
How can I ever repay you for the glowing accolades you bestowed on my wrasslin' career at MHHS?
Dick the Bruiser - aka - Steve Delph - Seattle
P.S. I trust that you received my check as promised.

Dear Mike and Garry,
I had a ball participating in your "rigged" golf tournament at the exclusive and immaculate Anderson Country Club.
Garry, your excellent score of 74 demonstrates that you may have chosen the wrong profession, although it may not be too late for you to join the Champions Tour. Mike, thanks for blowing that short putt at 18. I can always use the extra cash. Thanks again for pairing me up with those two babes, Lizann Gibson and Karen Carner, as well as that Roosevelt Roughrider, Larry Koob. He's the real deal! Reminds me of a fading Jack Nicklaus. Or was that Jack Hulse? I'll remember ACC as a highlight of my golfing career.
Sincerely,
Arnold Palmer - aka Steve Delph - Seattle

"Anne and I enjoyed the wonderful reunion that you and the committee made possible. It was great for me to see so many very old friends.
Everyone looked just the same as I remembered them from '65, although I must have changed somewhat, since so few of them seemed to recognize me. After watching the resurrection of our mascots, Brad and Karen Carner, it occurred to me that we should have had a She-Pirate back then. Kudos to Mr. Eric Len Edwards and especially you, Peggy, for your Herculean efforts. Let's do it again before it's too late."

"Thanks so much for the greatest time ever at the reunion.  You and all your committee did such an outstanding job and because you live close to Anderson, I guess you had to do all the work as the rest of us just had to get to Anderson--we outside the state certainly do appreciate your hard work and time, it was a great time re-connecting with everyone.  Eric was perfect as emcee and made the evening such fun!!  I think Bob Hope's ending song "Thanks for the Memories" probably says it best--thanks, Peggy et al."

"Thank you to you and all of your team who did so much to make this such a great time for all.  It was so good to see everyone.  Your Class reunion booklet is wonderful.  I truly enjoy looking through it to see where everyone is living.  We have spread out all over the country.  The food was excellent.  The disc jockey was great.  And most of all - our classmates are the best!!!!

"I can only say....THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART.  What a magnificient event!!  I was blown away right from the start...the location, decorations, program and schedule was just perfect.  Eric was perfect as MOC and did a great job.  The memories will be with me forever as I continually replay the evening again and again.  Your hard work has made a lot of friendships connect again and new ones kindle.  I still get a smile when I recall Brad tumbling into the room and singing the school song...MHHS FOREVER!!  Your very special and we all thank you for your tireless search to find all of us.  Looking forward to the next one...."

"Peggy, THANK YOU again for everything you did to put our 40th reunion together.  It was a great success.  It was the first one I have attended but had to be one of the best.  I just had complete knee replacement on June 27, so I wasn't feeling up to par.  I had to leave after the program part of the evening.  I didn't get to visit with everyone I would have liked to but at least I enjoyed seeing them.  I am so glad I came.  Brad and his wife were certainly a highlight of the evening and Eric did an excellent job as MC.  The food was wonderful.  What else can I say but it was a "fun time".  Thanks again for everything!"

I was sorry about your Dad passing on, my Dad has been gone many years, I know how that hurts. Take care, and thanks for the good job done." Linda Bodenhorn Rich

"What a wonderful weekend!  It was so much fun trying to guess who everyone was because we all had changed so much.  My what 40 years can do. It was a wonderful time reminiscing.  Thank you so much for all of your hard work.  I can just imagine how relieved you must feel now that it is all behind you.  I certainly hope you had the opportunity to enjoy visiting with everyone.
Eric Edwards was perfect!  He made all of us feel very relaxed. I am so glad my husband and I attended (he had a great time too).  I have talked to a couple of people who attended Friday night, but did not attend the Saturday evening event, they are so sorry they didn't go.  Hopefully all of us can attend the 50th.

"Wow!  What a ride! Thank you for making it possible.  I was honored to participate on the committee to help bring your ideas to fruition.  Yes, we all helped, but you had the vision. When I walked into the Paramount Ballroom Saturday night and realized..."this is it!", I couldn't have been more proud of what had been accomplished, nor more excited about what was about to happen.  As I watched our classmates coming in and tried to greet as many as possible, I could only think "this is the Class of '65,  look at us all!   They can take away our school, they can tear it down, but WE are MHHS!  WE are the Pirates! "   What a wonderful evening we all had together! I had a wonderful time at the reunion  It all went too quickly though. The Paramount Ballroom looked spectacular with all the beautiful decorations!  It was wonderful to see such a good turnout.  We did good under your direction!"

"Thanks again for the wonderful Reunion. You did a terrific job and I for one want to really thank you. We couldn't have done it without you. That was without a doubt one of the most memorable evenings of all time. I think when it comes to Reunions the class of 1965 has done the very best of all. It was a Class Act definitely. It was so much fun visiting with all the classmates. Many thanks again to everyone that made it possible."

"Hi guys!! Well it is finally over!! Well at least all the planning.  I have heard from Margie and Kathy Hollingsworth and they said they had a blast and everything went well.  The decorations were beautiful and everything was first class all the way.  Great job to both of you.  I can't imagine the hours you have spent on this.  I am so sorry I was not there and thus the reason for my email. Your updates throughout the year have been fabulous and fun. Looking forward to seeing some pictures on the website. Well Peggy and Jim, MANY MANY KUDOS TO YOU BOTH !!!"

"Thanks for the wonderful website and updates for classmates.  Sorry to hear about Norm.  But because of this website, two past friends who I haven't seen in over 30 years have contacted me.  Paul Moody from our class and Dale Boone who was in the class of '66 have both e-mailed me and then we spent a long time on the phone reminiscing and catching up. Thanks again!!"

Just wanted to say a big thanks to the reunion committee for a great weekend. It was great to catch up with everyone after 40 years. My husband said that your website was fantastic and he is going to show it to his reunion committee as an example of how things ought to be done. Just wanted you and Jim to know that. Thanks again.
